Former Celtic player Mark Wilson has recently given his opinion about the future of Callum McGregor.

With Scott Brown set to leave Celtic in the summer, one topic of discussion on the latest edition of Superscoreboard was potential replacements for the veteran. One player that Wilson talked about was McGregor and he gave his views about his future.

Wilson sounded uncertain about whether McGregor can replace Brown’s leadership in the team and he even cast doubts about whether the midfielder would want to take over the responsibility.

Do you think Celtic will appoint McGregor as captain?

No

Brown has captained the Hoops regularly since 2012 and even in the current campaign, the midfielder has made 26 appearances for the side, grabbing a rating of 6.81. He picked up an assist against St. Johnstone recently (as per Whoscored).

McGregor has been tipped to replace Brown as captain by former Hoops star Charlie Mulgrew, who even hailed the Scotland international.

Wilson though, has doubts regarding this and he made his views clear (9:38): “Callum McGregor, I think he’s such a cultured player. I don’t think he has the respect of the boys that are in the dressing room just now. I don’t think he’s been a good [replacement] for Scott Brown when Scott’s been out of the team. I’ve just got a feeling that the new manager might go down a different route.

“All captains don’t need to be shouty and in people’s faces. I just wonder how much Callum McGregor would want that role because when you take on that role, you take on the armband permanently, you are the club captain, your name is printed in the programme at the start of every week. Does he want that responsibility? Does it take a bit away from your game?

“Because you’ve got so much else on your mind? And Scott did find it hard in his opening years. And he grew into the role. Would Callum McGregor want that? I don’t know. And I just think a new manager might have different ideas about it.”

TIF Thoughts on McGregor…

While Brown has captained Celtic for many years, McGregor has begun to captain the club in recent seasons too and even in the current season, the midfielder has been the team’s skipper on multiple occasions (as per Transfermarkt).

That is a reflection of the fact that perhaps, McGregor can assume the form of a leader at the club. But having said that, it will all depend on the next manager. While Eddie Howe looks set for a move, he is reported to be interested in bringing Bournemouth captain Steve Cook to Celtic. So seeking leadership from the outside might become an option too, once Howe is appointed.
