West Ham United journalist Roshane Thomas has been sharing the latest details concerning midfielder Jesse Lingard and his future with the summer transfer window on the horizon.
This comes after Thomas made an appearance on a recent episode of The Athletic’s West Ham-themed podcast U Irons, where he spoke about a range of subjects concerning David Moyes’s side.
On the subject of Lingard, who spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan at West Ham from Manchester United and was recently included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad for the upcoming European Championships, Thomas had this to say about his future.
He said: “Listen, we don’t know yet in terms of what will happen with Jesse Lingard’s future.
“We hope he will stay, formal talks haven’t taken place yet, but Jesse will look back on his loan spell and be like ‘wow, this club have really helped me out.’
“We’ve seen a rebirth of Jesse Lingard, he’s back in the England squad, that wasn’t the case early in the season, so it’s been great to see and well deserved in my opinion.”
Since arriving at West Ham back in the January transfer window, the 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £13.5 million, made 16 appearances for the Hammers in the Premier League in which he managed to score nine goals and provide five assists in the process (per Transfermarkt).

Given the impressive impact Lingard has had since arriving at West Ham in terms of goal contributions, it would be safe to assume the east London club would be interested in signing the Englishman on a permanent basis this summer.

In our view, if West Ham would be able to offer Lingard regular playing time in the Premier League next season, which would presumably be a safe bet considering he only missed one league game for them due to ineligibility, then perhaps a permanent move would be a better option than staying at Manchester United, where he didn’t make a single league appearance this season before heading to east London.
Also, with West Ham managing to secure a place in the Europa League for next season, this would only act as an extra incentive for Lingard to sign there permanently, in our view.
With Moyes sharing his hope that Lingard will stay at the club, it seems that a big decision will have to be made this summer regarding the matter.
