Tottenham Hotspur icon Graham Roberts says Dele Alli could still force his way into the England squad, telling This Is Futbol that he simply needs the opportunity.

The attacking midfielder was sidelined by former manager Jose Mourinho, who opted against picking the 25-year-old throughout his reign.

Alli made just two starts in the Premier League, one of which came on the opening day of the season against Everton.

Throughout the final five games of Mourinho’s reign, the attacking midfielder played just 29 minutes of league football, primarily sitting on the substitutes’ bench.

Roberts believes he remains an important member of the Spurs squad who could come into the team and score goals.

And he thinks that could see Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate consider taking him to the European Championships at the end of the season.

Alli hasn’t played for England since 2019 in the Nations League third-place play-off against Switzerland.

Roberts told TIF: “What happens now if Dele Alli comes in and scores, say, 10 goals between now and the end of the season, does Gareth Southgate pick him?

“I do not believe that you could lose that much ability because I just think the kid has got everything. When he’s at his best, I think he’s arrogant, and I think you need that little bit inside you.”
