Barry Fry insists that Gareth Bale deserved more minutes at Tottenham Hotspur under Jose Mourinho than he was given, telling This Is Futbol that he is plenty good enough to be in the team.

Mourinho was sacked prior to the Carabao Cup final clash with Manchester City, with Ryan Mason placed in interim charge.

He oversaw a defeat at Wembley, along with a 2-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League.

Bale was sidelined throughout Mourinho’s reign and made just six starts in the league under the ex-Chelsea boss.

He did start against Saints and scored, a reminder of the quality he possesses.

Bale had scored five goals under Mourinho, with two braces against Burnley and Crystal Palace and a strike versus Brighton & Hove Albion.

Fry thinks he remains a top player who can make a genuine impact for Spurs, though time is somewhat running out, as the club have just five games of the season remaining, starting against Sheffield United this weekend.

Speaking exclusively to TIF, Fry said: “I think Gareth Bale should have played more times, should have started more games for Tottenham because he’s good enough.

“If he wasn’t fit enough, I’d sooner start him and play him for an hour and then take him off, rather than not put him on as Mourinho did.”
