Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer believes his old side could do a lot worse than Crystal Palace defender Jeffrey Schlupp in their quest to replace Ryan Bertrand.

Bertrand confirmed earlier this month that he would be leaving the south coast club this summer when his contract expires, leaving Ralph Hasenhuttl needing to look for a new left-back.

Similarly, Schlupp could also be leaving his current employers on a free transfer before the start of next season, with the Premier League title winner’s contract set to expire as well.

Would you take Schlupp on a free transfer?

Why not?

Why not?

No thanks!

No thanks!

For Palmer, if that does happen, he could be a player worth exploring for Southampton. When asked by TIF if Schlupp was the kind of defender his former club should be looking at, the ex-England international said:

“Yeah, obviously. I mean, there’s no risk, is there? There’s no risk.

“Left-backs are hard to come by, left-footed left-backs who can play are hard to come by. It’s very, very difficult.

“Losing Bertrand, you know, it will be a problem for them.”

Making over 170 Premier League appearances, Schlupp is quite clearly a very experienced player.

He played a big part in Leicester City’ incredible 2015/16 title-winning season and has also shown down the years that he is a versatile footballer, able to play left-back, further forward and in the middle.

At 28, the prime of his career, he could be very smart business for Southampton or any other team that decides to pick him up on a free transfer should he not extend his contract at Selhurst Park.
