In an exclusive interview with This is Futbol, former Newcastle United centre-back Steve Howey has claimed that he can’t think of any other manager that would be better for the Magpies than Steve Bruce.
Bruce has come in for criticism since he was appointed as manager in 2019 and after appearing on talkSPORT this week, the former Sunderland manager has claimed that certain people didn’t want him to get the job from day one.
Does Bruce deserve a new contract?
Newcastle appeared to be heading for the Championship after their 3-0 defeat against Brighton, however since then they have only lost twice and have taken points off Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Liverpool and Leicester City.
Speaking on how he can’t think of anyone who could do better than Bruce and how being manager at Newcastle is an extremely difficult challenge, Howey exclusively told This is Futbol:
“For me, at the moment, being manager at Newcastle United is like a poisoned chalice. You could get a top manager in, but if you’re not giving them the funds to buy the right players, then you are always going to struggle.
“I can’t think of anybody who could do better because top managers would want a vast amount of money to spend, and I don’t think they would get it from the owner.”
Bruce has received huge boosts in recent weeks as his two star players, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson have returned and been in great form for the Magpies.
There have been reports suggesting that Bruce could be rewarded for keeping Newcastle in the Premier League with a new contract this summer.
