In an exclusive interview with This is Futbol, Newcastle United legend Steve Howey has claimed that the fans don’t want to give Steve Bruce any praise for the job he has done at St James’ Park.

Bruce has managed to turn the Magpies’ fortunes around after their embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Brighton, and they had only lost one of their previous six Premier League matches prior to their match against Manchester City, to not only secure their top-flight spot for another season but also see Bruce claim the April Manager of the Month award.

Does Bruce deserve a new contract?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The former Sunderland manager has had a fight on his hands since he was appointed as Rafa Benitez’s successor back in 2019, with many fans not happy with his arrival at the club.

Speaking on why supporters don’t want to give Bruce any praise when he does a good job and how criticism is fair if it’s not personal, Howey exclusively told This is Futbol:

Give criticism where it’s deserved, without it being personal, but I also think that you have to give praise when it’s deserved, and I think sometimes Newcastle fans even if he’s doing well don’t want to do that.

I think some fans are at the point now where no matter what he does, they will only give praise through gritted teeth.”

Newcastle's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Alan Shearer but how many goals did he score for the club?

Newcastle’s Premier League status was confirmed after Fulham were beaten by Burnley which put a stop to the potential relation decider on the final day when the Magpies travel to Craven Cottage.

There have been reports that Bruce is set to be offered a new contract by Mike Ashley after managing to keep the club in the Premier League for a second successive season.
