Keith Gillespie has exclusively told This is Futbol that Raphael Varane should be Manchester United’ number one centre-back target this summer.

Devils haven’t added to their central defensive department since signing Harry Maguire from Leicester in 2019.

United sit second in the Premier and are in the final of the Europa League, but haven’t been unable to find a sufficient partner for the England defender.

Should Rice join Man United?

Victor Lindelof has played alongside Maguire for most of this season, starting all but seven of United’s Premier League games this season.

There’s also the injury-hit Eric Bailly, whilst youngster Axel Tuanzebe is highly thought of at Old Trafford.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly making a centre-back his priority this summer, and Gillespie believes that the 6 ft 3 colossus might be the of the bunch.

Varane has played more than 350 times for the Spanish giants, winning four Champions League titles, and was a key part of the France side that won the World Cup in .

He told This is Futbol:

“There’s talk of maybe Varane. We know he’s a top player. I’m sure bringing him in would help, there’s talk about him leaving Real Madrid.

“He’s the sort of player that you should be interested in signing. He’s been at Madrid for a few years now and has performed well for France.

“He would be the main one for me. He’s one that if he came available, you would have to throw your hat in the ring for.”
