Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry says that Ed Woodward did a fantastic job by signing both Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani for Manchester United, in an exclusive interview with This Is Futbol.
The two have been central to the club’s success this season, with the club currently second in the Premier League table and comfortably set in the Europa League semi-finals.
United beat Roma 6-2 in the first leg of their semi-final at Old Trafford, with both the Portuguese and the Uruguayan scoring twice each.
Fernandes has, in total, scored 26 goals and laid on 16 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions, while Cavani has netted 12 in 33 games.
Woodward has, of course, resigned after the fall-out from the European Super League of which United were meant to be a part, only for the fan backlash to spook those involved.
He will not leave the club until the end of the season but Fry says that Woodward deserves credit for the signings he has brought in over the past 12 months, specifically Fernandes and Cavani.
Speaking to TIF, he said: “This particular year with the players that he’s got in…. a year ago, he made a fantastic signing, he’s been unbelievable for them in midfield.
“I think also, there was a lot of criticism directed at him when he got the centre-forward but the centre-forward’s been excellent for them.
“No matter how old he is, he’s a class player and when he plays for United, he links all the play up, and he’s most probably the best centre-forward United have got in as much as he can hold the ball up, he works hard, he brings other players into play, he finishes quite well, he works back as well, whereas some United players don’t do that.”
