Former Everton star Michael Ball has told This Is Futbol that Marcel Brands has a tough job on this summer as he bids to make Everton genuinely competitive in the Premier League.

The club’s director of football has signed a new contract until 2024, meaning that he will remain central to the club’s recruitment for the foreseeable future.

Brands has been involved in some of the club’s highest-profile deals, bringing in the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan, Richarlison and Lucas Digne.

Everton have enjoyed a reasonably successful season this term and are eighth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea but with a game in hand.

Ball believes that Brands will be aware of the desire of manager Carlo Ancelotti to bring in players who can slot straight into the first XI, but he thinks he faces serious competition this summer.

Everton are not the richest club, of course, with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all richer than the Toffees.

Speaking exclusively to TIF, Ball, who played for the club between 1996 and 2001, said: “He knows what we need, he’s got a very experienced manager who will want players to come into the starting XI straight away. But that does cost money so balancing the books is a difficult job.

“There’s a lot of good quality players out there, but there’s also a lot of teams who have got the wealth also. So you’re against these clubs.

“You’ve got to try and convince these players that we’re on a journey, we’re trying to push for Europe and trying to be successful.

“And if they could be a part of that, fantastic, but it’s a difficult job to be in.”
