Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie thinks that the Ibrox boss would consider a move to Villa Park at some point in the future.

This follows on from a report by Football Insider claiming current manager Dean Smith’s future is ‘far from secure’ and that Chief Executive Christian Purslow has ‘a strong interest’ in bringing Gerrard to the club.

First up in this Gareth Barry quiz, which club did Villa sign the midfielder from?

This doesn’t come across as the greatest show of support for Smith, especially given the progress they have made compared to last season, and speaking exclusively to Football Fan Cast, Hendrie admitted that whilst he is a fan of the work Smith has done at the club so far, that he would love to see Gerrard replace him if ever the job became available:

“I think if he had the choice of coming to a club like Villa, I think he’d certainly have a big look at that. He’s had that experience of going up and actually proving that he can do it.

“You can never rule it out. Christian Purslow would certainly say, ‘Yeah, I’d love Stevie G to be an Aston Villa manager.’ I think lots of people would possibly like the fact of that.

“I personally think he could come into the Premier League. I don’t want Dean Smith to go obviously, but if that was the upcoming manager, you’d think, ‘I wouldn’t mind having him at the football club.’”

Do you think Dean Smith deserves more credit?

Gerrard’s stock is certainly on the rise right now after the job he has done at Rangers, but Hendrie might be guilty of getting ahead of himself here. Whilst what Gerrard did was incredible, some of it has to be put up against the fact that Celtic didn’t exactly have the greatest campaign so there wasn’t really much of a challenge domestically.

And also with the club in the Champions League next season, something Villa don’t look anywhere near close to offering right now, it would have to take a dramatic turnaround within the next few years for Gerrard to leave what he has for the job at Villa Park.
