Former Leeds United man Jon Newsome has told This Is Futbol that the club cannot focus on finishing in the top four next season.

Fellow pundit Dean Windass has claimed in an interview with TIF that the club could qualify for the Champions League next season if Marcelo Bielsa stays at the club and they make the right signings this summer.

Newsome, though, believes that Leeds need to be more realistic as they look to enjoy another excellent season, with the club currently 11th in the Premier League table.

Will Leeds finish in the top half of the table?

No

No

The former Leeds defender believes that the club have to take small steps, and initially look to stay in the Premier League before realigning their goals once that is achieved.

Should the club be safe around Christmas, then they can start to aim higher, but Newsome insists that there is next to no chance of the club finishing in the top four in the 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking exclusively to TIF, the former Whites title winner said: “If you’re in and around Christmas time and you’ve got that number on the board, yeah great, you start looking a little higher.

“Can we make top six? Can we make top eight?

“To start talking about top four, listen, it would be wonderful, it would be absolutely wonderful for the club and for the supporters, a story for football more than anything else.

“But to sit here and talk about it now I think is a pipe dream in all honesty.”
