The Athletic’s Tim Spiers has been speaking on their latest Molineux View podcast to discuss all things Wolverhampton Wanderers related.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side recorded their first win since February last Friday at Craven Cottage as Adama Traore’s late goal provided the difference against Scott Parker’s Fulham.
The victory took Wolves up to 12th place in the Premier League table, but the Wanderers remain six points behind 11th-placed Aston Villa.
Do Wolves need to add defenders this summer?
Yes
No
However, one of Spiers’ main talking points on the podcast was the upcoming summer transfer window and areas in which Espirito Santo needs to strengthen his side.
He said: “So there’s four priorities this summer, left wing-back, centre back, centre [midfield], a backup striker in my mind. (39:02)
“So it’s how much do you want to spend, Jackie, that’s basically it and if they want to go out and spend £50m/£60m on players then they’re going to have to sell one of their saleable assets to bring that money in.
“We’ve discussed a couple of weeks ago they could sell Rafa Mir, Patrick Cutrone, Bruno Jordao, Dion Sanderson, Leonardo Bonatini, maybe get £30m/£35m for those, that may be enough for the summer.
“They could spend £20m on one player £10m on another and then get a couple of loans in and that’s four players there. That may be the route that they do it.”
TIF Thoughts on Spiers’ comments…
This season has proved a really difficult one for Wolves and a large reason behind their struggles has been the numerous serious injuries their players have suffered over the course of the campaign.
However, this does highlight the question of whether Wolves have adequate backup in the place of their main starting players. And the answer would seem to be no given they find themselves slumped in the bottom half of the table after finishing seventh last season.
One of the best examples of this has been their striker options with Raul Jimenez out injured. Yes, Wolves have the numbers to cope without Jimenez but their quality has not been up to scratch with Fabio Silva and Willian Jose scoring three Premier League goals between them – Silva with all three.
It will make for an interesting summer at Wolves with Spiers believing there not to be a huge amount of money available to spend.
