Steve Spencer has been speaking on the latest episode of The Wednesday Week podcast to discuss Dejphon Chansiri’s decision to hire Darren Moore as their manager.

The Sheffield Wednesday owner brought Moore in as their new permanent manager having played since the end of December without one.

Chansiri sacked Tony Pulis at the end of 2020 having just managed 10 matches for the Hillsborough club but with the Owls struggling the Thai owner pulled the plug.

However, Spencer admitted he does not believe the owner would be able to answer his logic behind hiring Moore, with some on the podcast believing the new manager to have been brought in to prepare for potential relegation to League One.

He said: “I don’t know the reasons why he [Moore] was brought in. I don’t think anybody does. I don’t think Chansiri [does], if we sat Chansiri down now and said, ‘Have you brought him in to keep us up, or to consolidate in League One or to prepare us for a return to the Championship?’, I don’t think Chansiri can answer that question for you. I really don’t, I don’t think he knows.”

TIF Thoughts on Spencer’s comments…

Moore certainly hasn’t had the desired new manager bounce which is so often the case when a new manager takes the reins at a club. The Owls find themselves dangerously flirting with relegation as they sit in 23rd place in the Championship table with just three games remaining.

The odds are stacked against Wednesday to find their way out of their relegation situation, with Rotherham United having two games in hand over Moore’s side.

The 47-year-old left Doncaster Rovers to take the job at Sheffield Wednesday, however, it seems like he may well be returning straight back to League One, with Spencer believing Moore to be Chansiri’s man to attempt to bring them straight back up from the start.
