An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

On the subject of Borner and his season so far, Howson had this to say on the player.

He said: “I’m not really in the habit of singling out individuals for criticism, especially when it’s been a collective effort for why Wednesday are in the position that they’re in.

“But I think when you talk specifically about Julian Borner, he really has gone downhill this season and there’s no getting away from it. For every good or strong performance he’s put in, I include Middlesbrough, that must be at least half a dozen times this season where he’s had an absolute stinker.

“His lack of pace has been exploited, and then he’s tried to be Beckenbauer playing out from the back and he took a heavy touch, and it’s just such sloppy play and it’s not as if he’s a young inexperienced player.

“He’s been now in the Championship, this is his second season, you can’t cut him that slack anymore and he’s an experienced player full stop and he’s captained a team in Germany.

“I just think that Julian Borner actually, in a lot of ways, sums up Wednesday this season of where he’s really struggled for consistency and he hasn’t played poorly all season, but for every decent match he’s thrown in, he’s just had an absolute mare.”

Wednesday signed Borner back in the 2019 summer window from German club Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer. Since arriving at Hillsborough, the 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.08 million, has made 68 appearances for the club in which he has managed to pitch in with three goals in the process (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Dom Howson’s comments on Borner…

Despite Howson’s issues with some of Borner’s performances this season with Wednesday, WhoScored have given the defender a season rating of 6.78/10 for his overall performance throughout the current campaign, making him Wednesday’s third-highest rated player currently in the squad.

Moving forward, with Borner’s current contract at Wednesday set to run out in 2022, the club will need to make a decision at the end of the season as to whether or not they believe Borner is good enough to continue at the club and see out his deal.

Also, with Wednesday currently in danger of being relegated to League One, Borner’s future at the club could well depend on which league they will be playing in next season.
