Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has lauded the potential signing of free agent Ravel Morrison, indicating the Owls have nothing to lose with such a roll of the dice.
A report in the Examiner has since offered indications that the Owls could be receptive to taking Morrison on in a short-term deal in a bid to bolster Darren Moore’s attacking options, following a training period with the squad.
Speaking to FootballFanCast, Palmer endorsed the feasibility of a move and what it could bring to Hillsborough: “Darren’s in a difficult situation,” the ex-Wednesday player claimed.
“He’s out of contract, he’s a talented player, Darren took over the situation knowing that the transfer window had gone, knowing that he wasn’t able to bring in any players, so maybe Ravel can help him out from now to the end of the season.”
Palmer continued by speculating as to what Owls boss Darren Moore may be thinking by bringing Morrison into the fold:
“Maybe he [Moore] just thinks, what’s he got to lose? I’m sure he’s not looking at signing Ravel long-term, but what’s he got to lose short-term from now to the end of the season if he can bring him something different?”
Morrison’s story is one of immense triumph and talent marred by attitude issues and friction with teammates and managers.
Wilfried Zaha and Sam Allardyce are two well-known footballing figures to have shed light on Morrison’s attitude and issues behind the scenes, rendering him as a gamble.
Yet given the fact that the Owls are staring down the barrel of relegation, the lack of the luxury of a transfer window could render the arrival and availability of Morrison as a fortuitous one.
