Ex-Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer has called upon Sheffield Wednesday to plan for a major squad overhaul – despite practical realities complicating the likelihood of a rebuilding job.

Several key players referenced by Palmer, including Barry Bannan and Osaze Urhoghide, are out of contract in the summer whilst another key player in Liam Shaw has signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic.

Palmer acknowledged that the finances and in-limbo status of the club may prevent the Owls from truly ushering in a new era for the squad, but nonetheless spoke on what the club needs.

Speaking to Transfer Tavern, Palmer said of his former club:

“Apart from Barry Bannan and Osaze Urhoghide, there’s not too many. Liam [Shaw], I’d keep, you know, there’s a few I’d keep, but there would be wholesale changes, trust me. But he [Darren Moore] can’t do that in the league now.

“If these guys are on the money that they’re on and they’re on three or four-year contracts or whatever, you can’t make wholesale changes. You can’t.”

Amid uncertainty surrounding the Owls’ Championship status with the club fighting for its survival in the league, now is not the time for idealism.

However, Palmer may get his unlikely wish in some senses; the out-of-contract status of several key players almost inevitably means gaps in the squad will need to be filled.

Even if the Owls hypothetically retained the likes of Bannan and Urhoghide, Shaw’s confirmed departure necessitates one potential replacement.

Consequentially, a short-term focus on retaining Championship status could provide a platform for at least a minor squad reshuffle at Hillsborough.
