Rangers: Graham Roberts Lauds James Tavernier for Improvement

Former Rangers and Spurs defender Graham Roberts has praised Rangers captain James Tavernier for proving his doubters wrong and leading his club to the Premiership title.

Tavernier has previously come under fire for some disparaging claims on the mentality and resilience of his own club, claiming Rangers previously acquiesced to the opposition too easily.

Rangers have come leaps and bounds since his comments, however, and so too has Tavernier.

Despite playing at right-back, Tavernier is on track to lift his club’s Golden Boot at the end of the season with 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premiership and a further 5 direct goal involvements in the Europa League.

The Gers skipper has played an integral role in convincingly bringing the title to the Ibrox, and Roberts hailed the individual impact of Tavernier.

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Roberts said of the English defender:

“He’s been brilliant, led from the front,” Roberts claimed.

“He’s been absolutely fantastic. I think he was getting a bit of stick last year, giving away silly goals, and I think he worked really hard in pre-season.

“And being with Steven Gerrard he has done an absolutely amazing job, it’s no more than what they deserve this year.”

Rangers host Celtic in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Sunday and will be hoping to show that despite their dominant title win, they still retain a hunger to maximise their success this season.

From Tavernier claiming Rangers were ‘not good enough domestically to react’ to pressure to lighting up Scottish football, it seems as though off-field hard work has paid off.

Rangers fans will be hoping for more of the same from the club captain as they look to attract further honours in the near future – likely helped by more robust attacking displays from the right-back.
