Journalist and pundit Peter Martin has recently given his opinion about the idea of Callum McGregor stepping into Scott Brown’s shoes next season to captain the Hoops.

Martin hosted the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and the panel talked about numerous topics in Scottish football, including the upcoming Old Firm derby and Celtic.

They talked about Callum McGregor replacing Brown’s leadership at the club, but Martin described the Scotsman to be a completely different player to veteran Brown and isn’t confident that McGregor can do the job of replacing Brown.

Is McGregor a good leader?

McGregor is a product of the Celtic youth academy and made his debut for the side back in the 2014/15 campaign, becoming a first-team regular in the lineup since.

Brown will join Aberdeen on a free transfer in the summer, as he takes up a player-coach role under Stephen Glass.

While talking about McGregor, Martin made it clear that Celtic might have to sign someone else to replace Brown as the 27-year-old is incapable of doing that.

He said: “One of the things that I did read this morning – and again, sometimes you have to treat them with a pinch of salt – somebody was saying that Callum McGregor could easily fill the shoes as captain of Celtic from Scott Brown.

“What a totally different player, and I think they’re going to have to go and find a Scott Brown somewhere. I don’t know where they’re going to find him but Callum McGregor is not the man to fill his shoes.”

TIF Thoughts on McGregor…

Journalist Michael Gannon had recently tipped McGregor to replace Brown because of the influence that he carries on and off the pitch for Celtic. Former Hoops man Charlie Mulgrew has also stated that the Scotsman can replace Brown, stating his own experiences with the 27-year-old.

He has been described as someone who leads by example and perhaps, that is important considering that only five other players have played more minutes than him this season in Europe.

Even in the 2019/20 season, only Harry Maguire, Rui Patricio and Victor Nelsson had played more minutes than him. It shows that he’s a regular part of the side and perhaps, he has the will to play every game for the club. Only seven Celtic players have grabbed a better rating than him in the Premiership (as per WhoScored).

So perhaps, McGregor would certainly be a good shout to become the next Celtic captain as he can clearly set an example for others to follow.
