Journalist Scott McDermott has named the position that he thinks Rangers will prioritise in this summer’s transfer window.

With the league title wrapped up, focus can start to turn towards next season and who is going to be playing for the club. But where do Rangers need to be looking first and foremost?

Speaking on the Record Rangers podcast, McDermott felt that once they’d gotten rid of players not up to scratch, sorting out the position of defensive midfield would be crucial for them ahead of some of their bigger, more important games next season.

He said: “I think the priority will be a defensive midfield player. I don’t think [Bongani] Zungu has really cut it, I don’t expect Rangers to take up the option to go and sign him.

“I think they’ll want somebody for big games next season to give Gerrard that option – a bit stronger, a bit more robust. Whether it’s to play with Davis or instead of Davis, and obviously Ryan Jack can play that position, but he’s had his problems with injuries. So I think right here and now, that will be in Steven Gerrard’s mind as a main priority.”

TIF Thoughts on Scott McDermott’s comments about Rangers’ priority…

McDermott is right when it comes to Rangers needing to upgrade in defensive midfield, because they have got some big tests next year, especially when it comes to the Champions League, where they may come up against a number of big teams.

And whilst they have got a pretty good system in place this season, having only conceded ten goals during their league campaign, if they want to do well, then there is certainly no harm in getting someone in to act as a shield in front of that backline to make life as easy for them as possible.
