Retired Belgium international Gert Verheyen has been speaking on the latest instalment of the Record Rangers podcast, where he claimed Gers target Fashion Sakala is ‘an interesting player.’

Steven Gerrard’s side are reportedly set to offer the Zambia international a four-year contract over the summer after the 24-year-old’s deal at current club KV Oostende expires.

During his three-year stay in Belgium, the pacey forward has bagged 28 goals in 97 appearances for De Kustboys, attracting the attention of several big sides.

Verheyen knows Sakala better than most, having managed the African striker throughout the 2018/19 season, and provided some interesting insight into the Rangers target.

He said: “I read about the interest, there was already a few teams interested in him – bigger teams from Belgium, Antwerp this winter also because he had a very good season, and he is a free transfer. That’s a big difference, especially nowadays; most of the clubs seek players who don’t cost too much money.

“I think it’s an interesting player. But still needs to progress. You know, in these three years, in the three years at Oostende, [it] was his best year last year.

“He only scored three [in his first year] and had some difficulties to adapt on playing style. Had to adapt, really was a player who didn’t get any real formation like in youth academies. Didn’t know too much about tactical knowledge, was poor in space awareness, didn’t know where to run.”

TIF Thoughts on Sakala…

13 of Sakala’s 28 strikes for Oostende have come this season, showcasing the strides that the in-form striker has made in recent months.

With current Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos linked with a summer move away from Ibrox, Sakala could be the ideal replacement for the Colombia international and Verheyen’s comments may suggest Rangers could be onto a winner here.
