Exclusive: McAvennie says Kennedy must go with same team with Old Firm

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has exclusively told This is Futbol that John Kennedy must go with an unchanged side for Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Kennedy maintained his unbeaten run as caretaker manage when Celtic thrashed Livingston last weekend to not only record their biggest victory of the season, but guarantee second-place and a spot in next season’s Champions League qualifiers.

However, attention turns to the Scottish Cup this weekend and a crunch fourth-round clash with their Glasgow rivals in what is Celtic’s last chance of silverware.

Should Celtic progress, Kennedy’s team would be just three games away from becoming the first side ever to win the competition five times on the bounce.

And following their impressive showing against Livi on Saturday, McAvennie has urged Kennedy to pick the same side that started, providing James Forrest, who limped off at Parkhead, is passed fit.

“If Forrest it fit, I would start the same team, unfortunately for Ryan Christie,” McAvennie told This is Futbol.

“I would start the same team because James brings that balance. He causes arguments with Celtic fans, whether he’s that good or that bad, but there’s no doubting he brings something to the team.

“He gives us that balance, he gives us that width and he chases back, so James for me has got to start.”
