Former Celtic star Mark Wilson has recently talked about who can captain the Hoops next season onwards.
Wilson recently hosted an episode of The Celtic Huddle podcast and the panel talked about numerous issues involving Hoops’ players, next manager and potential transfers.
They spoke about Scott Brown’s exit and who can replace him as their captain. Wilson believes that while he loves Callum McGregor, the next captain might be a new player.
Brown has captained the Hoops for many years now and even against Rangers, the midfielder donned the captain’s armband for the Bhoys. McGregor though, has also captained the side multiple times and that includes multiple games in the current campaign.
Is McGregor Celtic's next captain?
Yes
No
Wilson though, talked about the club’s next captain and he believes that McGregor won’t be permanent captain and if the new manager gets a big signing, he could be the next skipper.
Wilson claimed “I must say I love Callum McGregor and he has done a fantastic job, but I just think it will be somebody else or somebody new. I think it might be somebody new. Whoever the manager is, if they get one of these big signings, it could be somebody new.”
TIF Thoughts on Celtic’s next captain…
While Celtic will make their own, independent decision about the club’s next captain, McGregor has been at the club for many years now and he’s a product of the club’s youth academy too.
More than that, he’s played over 2,000 minutes in the Premiership many times over the last few seasons and it shows that he’s been a constant part of the side. And the fact that he’s also captained the side in recent seasons suggests that handing him the skipper’s armband would represent a natural transition from Brown to McGregor.
