Journalist John McGarry has recently talked about Celtic’s hunt for a director of football.

McGarry appeared as a guest on the latest episode of The Celtic Huddle podcast and he was asked about numerous issues involving the Hoops. He was asked about the club’s chase of a potential director of football. He believes that the Hoops can’t have both Fergal Harkin and Richard Hughes at the club after both were linked to the club – suggesting that either candidate could assume the role.

It was reported some weeks ago that Celtic were eyeing a move for Harkin, who is currently at Manchester City. Having said that, Eddie Howe has reportedly made a demand for Hughes to be brought in from Bournemouth as technical director.

Should Celtic hire Richard Hughes?

McGarry talked about the director of football role at Parkhead, saying that the Hoops have been working towards creating a model where the manager is working in tandem with the director of football.

The journalist stated: “I don’t think there’s room for both of them. Richard Hughes is the current technical director at Bournemouth. Celtic have been looking towards a model where you have a manager working alongside [a DOF] type figure. If Richard Hughes was to come in, he will fill that role, there won’t be room for two.

“It comes down to what Celtic envisage to be the director of football that Richard Hughes would probably become – that might be what’s holding up a lot of the discussions at the moment.”

TIF Thoughts on Richard Hughes…

Hughes is known to be Howe’s trusted ally and they’ve worked together at Bournemouth in the past, which shows that they might have a good working relationship. It has been stated that Celtic are open to the idea of bringing the Scotsman in alongside Howe.

Considering that the Cherries rose from League Two to the Premier League under Howe, Celtic might want something on a similar scale to happen at Parkhead. So because of that, bringing Hughes in should be a priority for them. It might also show that they are ready to back Howe with whatever they have.
