Former Celtic star Joe Ledley has revealed some details about his exit from Parkhead, making his regrets about leaving clear.

This came after Ledley appeared as a guest on the latest episode of the Celtic Huddle podcast and the panel talked about multiple issues involving the Parkhead-based club. Ledley was also asked about his Celtic departure in January 2014, when he joined Crystal Palace.

Ledley made it clear that while discussions were ongoing about the extension of his contract, he decided to head to the Premier League and he still regrets leaving.

The Welsh midfielder had been at Celtic for about three and a half years. He had joined the club from Cardiff City in 2010 on a free transfer before leaving for the Eagles for a fee of £3.15 million (as per Transfermarkt).

Ledley made it clear that he wanted to test himself in the Premier League at the age of 28, as it was a league that he had closely followed throughout his career.

He said: “My contract was [running out]. I think it was January, only had a few months left. My contract was running off. There were discussions about signing a new one. At that time, I had done three and a half years.

“Looking back, I probably made a mistake. I wish I had stayed. Premier League for me at 28, was the right opportunity for me to go on and try something new and play in the best league, which I followed all my career. That was the main reason. Looking back, I would’ve liked to have stayed at Celtic for probably longer.”

TIF Thoughts on Joe Ledley…

Ledley managed to win as many as three Premiership titles at Celtic, helping the club win two Scottish Cup titles as well. Those are the only trophies he has won till date.

During his time at the club, the Welshman scored 30 goals and picked up 24 assists, whilst playing in a variety of positions on the pitch. During his time at Palace, the Eagles were constantly around the mid-table zone.

So considering what he won at Parkhead, it is easy to see why he has regrets about leaving Celtic.
