Many Celtic fans have flocked to a post on the club’s official Twitter page after a video was posted showing Vasilis Barkas failing to keep out a Tom Rogic strike in training.
The Greece international has had a tough first season since signing for the Glasgow giants last summer, having conceded 21 goals in his 20 appearances throughout 2020/21.
Barkas’ poor form has seen Scott Bain return to the starting lineup in recent weeks, with interim manager John Kennedy preferring the former Dundee man between the sticks, and a recent video only served to reinforce the reasoning behind that decision.
Attacking midfielder Rogic received the ball on the edge of the area before flicking it up and volleying it towards goal. Although the 28-year-old displayed a fine technique, the shot was arguably at a nice height for Barkas, but he was unable to push it over the bar, despite getting a good hand on the ball.
Celtic face two Old Firm derbies in their next four fixtures after drawing Rangers in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, and it doesn’t seem as though the supporters will be calling for Barkas to make a return to the first team after his latest display in training.
“Woeful defending. Griff should be closing that down quicker.”
“Doesn’t count it’s against Barkas”
“Barkas can’t even make a save in training”
“Keeper should be saving that, no surprise it’s Barkas in goal”
“Sack the goalie how bad”
“The pressing and goalkeeping is utterly horrendous”
It’s been a torrid campaign for everyone involved with Celtic, and Barkas has shouldered a large portion of the blame for the club’s poor performances this season, so perhaps these responses aren’t too surprising.
