TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan has laid out some of the troubles that West Ham United might face if they want to sign Jesse Lingard on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old loanee, valued at £13.5m on Transfermarkt, has been nothing short of a revelation since his move to the London Stadium, scoring six goals and chipping in with four assists in just eight appearances, including a spectacular goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

It’s no surprise then that West Ham United are interested in bringing him in on a permanent basis and will reportedly do ‘whatever it takes’ to get the deal done. But as heard on the TalkSport Daily podcast, Jordan felt that there may be some limitations to what they can do as a club before some serious knock-on effects kick in:

“I don’t know what Man United can price him at, but they’re not going to give him to West Ham. So Man United can move Lingard on to a variety of clubs, they get a bidding auction now going with clubs. Let’s say he goes for £20m, whatever he wouldn’t go for in economic terms in transfer fees will land in his wages.

“So if you think West Ham are subsequently going to pick up Lingard’s wages, which might be £150k to £200k on the basis of a reduced transfer fee, and then break the entire wage structure of the existing squad, I don’t know if Gold and Sullivan go that route either. Then, not only have you got the wages of Lingard, then you’ve got Michail Antonio knocking on the door and West Ham will have an anarchy of wage structure to get Lingard in.”

TIF Thoughts on Simon Jordan’s comments about Jesse Lingard and West Ham United…

If Jordan’s estimation of Lingard’s wages are correct, then when put up against the wages of West Ham United players, he is certainly right to think that there could be potential upheaval given how much more he could and would be earning for them.

So West Ham do need to be careful with how they handle the finances of any deal they could negotiate with Manchester United and Lingard, because whilst he could continue to help them on the pitch, he could cause them a lot of problems off it.
