Frank McAvennie has exclusively told This is Futbol that he thought Lukasz Fabianski’s new contract would open the door for David Martin next season.

With the Pole’s deal expiring in the summer, he recently signed fresh terms to extend his stay at the London Stadium until 2022.

But with Martin’s own contract running out in the coming months, and West Ham already linked with replacement goalkeepers, it appears likely that the former Millwall man will be moved on.

Nice easy one to start off with. How much do you think Declan Rice is worth?

The 35-year-old has appeared just five times following his move across London from The Den, one of which was a memorable win at Stamford Bridge back in November 2019.

But Martin hasn’t made a single first-team appearance this season, although he’s been providing competition for Fabianski, with Darren Randolph previously out injured.

And McAvennie told This is Futbol that Martin has been unlucky not to have been given more chances:

“I always took it that he signed the new deal to give the boy Martin more chance. David will see the boys in training and I thought the boy Martin did well when he came in, he didn’t do much wrong.

“You need a dominant goalkeeper, and I don’t know if Martin has got that yet.

“But I can’t stress enough how good it is for the club to have players fighting for places. So, if you get someone in fighting with Martin and Fabianski for the number one spot, then it’s only good for West Ham.”
