Former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has dismissed suggestions that current Inter manager Antonio Conte could replace Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

Mourinho’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has come under increased scrutiny following a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United and the Portuguese coach’s subsequent prickly comments.

Tottenham are currently adrift in the race for a top-four finish and former Chelsea boss Conte would come with experience of lifting the Premier League title from his time in London.

Following reports by Italian outlet Tuttosport (via Daily Star) claiming Conte could be tempted to leave his post at the San Siro and head to Spurs, Palmer has told Football FanCast that the decision to allow Mourinho leave would in favour of Conte would be a mistake:

“I think it’ll be the wrong move to sack Jose, I really do.

“I don’t see the need to sack him, so when the media are talking about, ‘oh, well, he should be sacked’ and talking about replacements… I mean Conte’s just about to win the league in Italy. Why would he want to leave his club?”

Should Jose Mourinho remain as Spurs manager?

Conte’s Inter side are marching towards the Serie A title, holding an eight-point cushion over city rivals AC Milan – further proof of the Italian’s credentials.

With a Carabao Cup final on the horizon and Spurs desperate to end a long wait for a trophy, Mourinho – who has a penchant for winning domestic trophies – will likely be given until the end of the season at least.

Whether that extends until next season should they lose the final to Manchester City and finish outside the top four, could be another matter.
