Liam Kennedy has been speaking on a recent edition of NUFC Matters about all things relating to Newcastle United.

Starting with a relatively recent player. Who is this?

One of the topics that he spent some time on was new contracts for certain players, with quite a few contracts set to run out at the club this summer.

One player whose deal expires at the end of the season is Fabian Schar, though the club have the option to extend his contract by a year, and the Shields Gazette reporter expects Newcastle to do that even if they then sell him in the summer.

He said: “Fabian Schar’s the one that will get extended for a year.

“Whether Fabian Schar stays at the football club or not – and there were rumours he was going to leave in January – I imagine he might well leave in the summer as well.

“Newcastle United will definitely take up the year extension on Schar, and I imagine there probably will be takers; he won’t cost anybody a large amount of money, but Newcastle United will definitely protect their asset because they’ve got the option to take another year on him.

“Fabian Schar is one that I’m certain will get done.”

Do you want Schar to stay at Newcastle?

TIF Thoughts on Schar…

Rafael Benitez signed the Swiss international for just £3m, and he has gone on to make 72 appearances for Newcastle and also won the North East Football Writers’ Player of the Year for his performances in 2019.

However, this season he has only made 17 appearances for the Toon and averaged a 6.44/10 rating from WhoScored for his league performances, which puts him in 15th place in the Toon’s squad.

He is also currently injured and it is unclear if he will be back before the end of the season, but even if he doesn’t play in any more games for the Toon this season, it looks like the club will extend his contract.

We hope that if they do extend his deal, he stays on Tyneside and gets back to the form he showed when he first arrived.
