Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the performance of Jonjo Shelvey during the first half of their game against Tottenham Hotspur.

With Newcastle United teetering just above the drop zone, it was always going to be important for them to put in a good performance to keep themselves at arm’s distance away from Fulham who are playing this afternoon.

One player though who, at least in the eyes of the supporters watching at home, didn’t seem to be putting in a good enough shift during the opening stages was the 29-year-old, valued at £11.7m on Transfermarkt. And they really let him know about it with their comments on social media, with many criticising his apparent lack of effort:

“For a centre midfielder Shelvey does love to leave the midfield of the park empty”

“Yep Shelvey again loses the ball and stands still doing nothing.”
“Shelvey Championship level no debate”
“Shelvey surrendering a tackle in midfield…imagine my shock!”
“Does Shelvey know we’ve started? So off the pace”
“How lazy is Jonjo Shelvey? Loses possession and saunters back, how he starts every game is beyond me! Even his passing is terrible now!”

Should Newcastle get rid of Jonjo Shelvey?

In such a big game for them, hopefully his game will pick up during the second half or there could be more criticism on the way.
