These Newcastle United fans have been reacting to comments made by Matt Ritchie ahead of their game with Burnley.

As with most games for Newcastle in the run-up to the end of the season, this game is going to crucial in their fight to stay in the league, but with Sean Dyche’s men only just above them in the table and in a run of form only slightly better than their own, it’s a game that they should feel confident in winning.

And speaking to the club ahead of the game, Ritchie, who has failed to register a single goal this year – albeit with limited appearances – talked about the mentality of the team recently and how they are going into games with a desire to try and win.

Given the pressure that Steve Bruce has been under this season for the perceived negative style of play, there were plenty of Newcastle fans on social media who used Ritchie’s comments to slate the head coach, as well as some of his teammates for their lack of effort up to this point in the season:

“Mentality to try and win the game. Someone tell Bruce.”

“This is why he clashes with Bruce. His mentality is completely different.”
“If only they all had that mentality and if only he was four years younger”
“Well said Matt, the rest of team need to ensure they follow Matt’s lead”
“How this lad is not in the squad week in and week out is beyond me. Personally I think he should be first on the team sheet and Captain, the only player with passion & the desire The Only player to scream encouragement to Joelinton when he missed & every other player on the pitch”
“Work hard? Where was the hard work in most of the games we dropped points against”
“If anyone should be captain it’s this man. His passion for the club and on the pitch is unbelievable”
