Many Newcastle United fans have been reacting to comments made by former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg regarding an incident during their game with Burnley.

Newcastle United managed to come away from the game with a crucial 2-1 victory in their attempts to stay in the Premier League, but things could have been an awful lot easier for them if referee Anthony Taylor or VAR referee Stuart Attwell had awarded them a penalty in the first half for a high foot by James Tarkowski on Sean Longstaff.

And writing for The Daily Mail, Clattenburg, a Newcastle United fan, agreed with the decision, noting that “It is clear from the replays that Tarkowski did not know Longstaff was behind him when he made his clearance. He cleared the ball and Longstaff threw his head in. It was a subjective call.”

Comments which, when relayed to supporters via The Chronicle onto Newcastle United – Chronicle Facebook page, left many fans furious as they felt it should have been a penalty on this occasion:

Did Newcastle deserve a penalty?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Lucky they managed to come away with all three points in the end, otherwise you feel like this incident might have been a much bigger talking point in the grand scheme of things.
