The 22-year-old Vitesse Arnhem centre-back has impressed for the Eredivisie outfit this season, achieving a healthy 6.92 WhoScored rating from his 28 league appearances.
According to Football Insider, the Magpies have joined Scottish giants Rangers in a race for his signature as the two British clubs aim to improve their backline for the next campaign.
The report states that Vitesse have slapped a £6m price tag on the Dutch under-21 international after Doekhi has helped Thomas Letsch’s side achieve the second-best defensive record in the Eredivisie this season, and the Newcastle fans are clearly excited by the club’s interest.
“Sign him I beg, every time our centre backs get in the ball I have a heart attack”
“Just sign him already”
“have you seen him, he looks like a unit”
“Very good CB. His positioning and timing with slide tackles/standing tackles is quality. Towers over strikers in the box and we do need a commanding CB. Were one of the only teams without a strong tall centre back who’s a threat defending from corners and then attacking them”
“I think we need new centre backs tbh”
“Anyone with #Arnhem on their uniform does for me!”
Steve Bruce’s men have conceded 54 times in their 33 Premier League games to date, and the addition of Doekhi could go some way to improving Newcastle’s dodgy defence as they look to build on what has been a rather underwhelming 2020/21 campaign.
