Former Newcastle United star Keith Gillespie has told This Is Futbol that Newcastle United will be panicking over the prospect of the club falling into the Championship, despite the recent upturn in results.

There appears to be just one relegation spot left in the Premier League, with rock-bottom Sheffield United 18 points behind the Magpies and 19th-placed West Bromwich Albion 11 points adrift.

Fulham, by comparison, are six points behind Newcastle, though the Magpies do have a game in hand.

Still, they face a horror run-in that includes games against West Ham United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester City. They also play Fulham on the final day of the season.

Fulham do play Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United but their run-in is softer and Gillespie thinks there will be some degree of panic at St James’ Park, given the attractive nature of the Cottagers’ play.

Newcastle did take a point from Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend and picked up a rare win at Burnley, leaving Fulham with plenty to do in their final half-a-dozen fixtures.

Nevertheless, Gillespie told TIF: “I’m sure there’s a bit of panic there as it is because they all of a sudden tumbled down the league. Maybe six, seven, eight weeks ago, I thought ‘no chance’, but I didn’t expect Fulham to go on the run that they did.

“You have to give credit to Fulham, going to places like Anfield and getting a win, they were fantastic that day.

“I like the style of football that Fulham play, they’re good to watch, whereas Newcastle, I can’t say the same about them, it’s sort of boring, mundane football.”
