Both Alan Shearer and Ian Wright were on the latest edition of Match of the Day 2 to analyse Sunday’s Premier League matches.

Starting with a relatively recent player. Who is this?

One of the games that the pair spent a lot of time on was Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, in which Joelinton scored only his fourth Premier League goal since he signed from Hoffenheim for £40m in the summer of 2019.

However, it wasn’t just his goal that impressed both Shearer and Wright, who lavished the £15.3m-rated Brazilian with praise.

Wright said: (35:19) “He was involved in everything. He kind of played a role where he was [using his] nuisance value; he was holding the ball up.

“This was his first chance in the game, we haven’t seen him score many of these, [but] it showed the intention that he’s in and around it [shot straight at Hugo Lloris].

“I would keep him up there, stay up there and get the ball, he’s in the box, he’s in the middle of the box, and that’s where I would keep him [Joelinton’s goal].

(36:10) “This is like [what] we saw, [they] couldn’t deal with him because of his strength.

(36:50) “Today, he was very difficult to deal with.”

Shearer then also praised the 24-year-old.

(37:04) “Very much like a lot of the team, he’s now set a standard that he has to stay the same as well because I thought that was his best game in a black and white shirt today.

“He got in there, he scored his goal, he should have scored another couple, but it was a good all-round performance.”

TIF Thoughts on Joelinton…

The Brazilian was brilliant for his team, which was reflected in his 8/10 rating from The Chronicle and his 7.34 rating from WhoScored.

Since he arrived on Tyneside, Joelinton has massively struggled to provide any real goal contributions for his side.

Still, on Sunday, he scored and was heavily involved in the equaliser, and we hope that this is a turning point for the 24-year-old and he goes on to turn his Newcastle career around.
