Edinson Cavani is headed ‘towards the exit door’ at Manchester United, according to Red Devils journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

United signed Cavani on a free transfer in October following the expiry of his PSG contract.

The Uruguayan only signed a one-year contract, and it seems no extension is forthcoming.

How has Cavani fared?

Cavani has scored seven goals in 28 appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this season.

He’s scoring every 210 minutes on average.

Cavani has also suffered a succession of fitness issues which have sidelined him for a total of 13 games.

‘The decision has pretty much been made’ by United

Speaking on Friday’s Manchester is Red podcast, Luckhurst noted that the optimism had around Cavani had faded in the past couple of months.

“Up until about February you’d have said he was having a pretty impressive season and you’d have encouraged United to extend his contract,” he said.

“Then he got injured.

“This is only going one way, which is towards the exit door.

“The decision has pretty much been made there.”

“I don’t see the harm in making that announcement before the end of the season.”

Red Devils eye fresh blood up front

United could launch a blockbuster move for a striker in the summer once Cavani departs.

Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland is said to be their priority, but they have also been tipped to pursue Harry Kane if he signals a desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur (via The Athletic).

Haaland could tie down the striking option for the next decade, while Kane is in his prime years.

The Cavani deal was different but still made a great deal of sense.

Seven goals is a reasonable return from the veteran striker, who may still have an important part to play as United look to tie down second place and win the Europa League.
