Keith Gillespie has exclusively told This is Futbol that he has no doubts Danny Ings would score a “bagful” of goals should he sign for Manchester City.

Ings was one of the top strikers in the Premier League last season, netting 22 goals, bettered only by Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy (23), but a number of hamstring and knee injuries have overshadowed the campaign of the Southampton man, who has 43 goals in total for the south coast outfit.

He scored Saints’ equaliser in their crucial victory over his former side Burnley on Sunday, but that was just Ings’ ninth league goal of the campaign.

Despite his dip in form, the England striker is reportedly wanted as a potential Sergio Aguero replacement at Manchester City – with the Argentinian recently announcing that he’s leaving the Etihad after 10 years at the end of the season.

The Premier League champions elect are also keen on Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, but Ings, whose Southampton deal runs out next summer, could be available at a cut-price.

And Gillespie, who played for City’s rivals United early in the Premier League era, believes that Ings would be an ideal fit for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

“You could put anybody in that side and they’ll score goals, that’s how good they are. This could happen. He could score a bagful of goals.

“I’m trying to think more because of his injury problems that he’s had. He’s not one that plays every week, but maybe with Man City that’s something that happens, they rotate so often, he doesn’t need to be playing every week.”

Guardiola recently came out and revealed that City won’t be signing an Aguero replacement this summer given the current financial situation, but with Ings possibly available on the cheap, he might be too good to turn down.
