Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has been sharing the latest transfer details concerning Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and his future at the Merseyside club with the upcoming summer transfer window on the horizon.

This comes after Romano made a guest appearance on a recent video from the SFeatleyTV YouTube channel where he spoke about a variety of transfer-related topics going around at the moment.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

On the subject of Wijnaldum and the possibility of him signing a new deal at Liverpool to stop him from leaving the club this summer when his current contract expires, Romano had this to say on the matter. (8.49)

He said: “[The] last proposal from Liverpool some months ago was the same contract with the same salary he has right now for three years so Wijnaldum was not so happy with this proposal, still waiting so at the moment there is no agreement between Wijnaldum and Liverpool. His agents are talking with Barcelona people but there is nothing signed because it depends on [Ronald] Koeman.

“Koeman wants Wijnaldum but there is still nothing decided also in Barcelona side so it’s a moment of talks but [it’s a] complicated situation with Liverpool and Barcelona leading the race but there is nothing signed yet with Wijnaldum and when you have free agents, you have to be careful until they sign the contract because they can change their mind in five minutes, so everything is open, but at the moment, no agreement with him.”

Liverpool signed Wijnaldum back in the 2016 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United for £24.75 million.

Since his arrival at Anfield, the 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £31.5 million, has made 228 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side across all competitions in which he has scored 22 goals and provided 16 assists in the process (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments on Wijnaldum and his future…

Taking into account what Romano said about the current situation with Wijnaldum and the reported interest from Barcelona, it seems to us that a decision will be made at the end of the current season from the Dutchman about what he wants to do moving forward.

Do you think Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

If Wijnaldum does end up leaving the Merseyside club this summer, the fact that Liverpool currently have other central midfielders in the squad such as Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones that can take Wijnaldum’s place in the team should not force the Reds into having to sign a replacement for the Dutchman.
