Journalist Rob Tanner has provided fans with an update on the contract situation surrounding Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Tielemans has been an incredibly important playmaker to the Foxes this season, leading them in passes per game as well as leading outfield players in long balls per game. And even though the 23-year-old still has some time to go on his contract, with it not set to expire until the summer of 2023, the club are keen to tie him down to another deal at some point.

But speaking on the 5000/1 podcast, Tanner said that whilst things are looking positive now, there could be some problems down the road if they leave putting pen to paper a little too late.

He said: “I’ve spoken to one of his advisers and talks have already started on an improved deal with Tielemans, which is fantastic news. And they say they’re quite relaxed about the situation, Youri is very, very happy at Leicester City, he’s enjoying working under Brendan, feels like he’s becoming a better player under Brendan.

“But there’s that caveat that of he’s reaching another level now, he’s taken his game to another level. There are clubs watching him, there are clubs monitoring his rise, and if he has an outstanding tournament for Belgium in the Euros, that could present Leicester with a bit of a conundrum. So it’s important they get that one sorted sooner rather than later. But I understand it will be left until the summer to sort out.”

TIF Thoughts on Rob Tanner’s comments about Youri Tielemans’ future at Leicester City…

Tanner’s point about leaving the contract until the summer is an interesting one. If the club were teetering on the brink of qualifying for Europe one way or the other, and they weren’t sure which competition they were going to be in, then you could understand if they were hesitant.

But with Champions League football looking pretty assured right now, then they should be looking to make this deal happen pretty soon, especially before the European Championships, where the whole continent and their big clubs will be looking at him and might look to get him in.
