Former Premier League journeyman Keith Gillespie has suggested Leeds United’s fans will be praying that Marcelo Bielsa signs a new contract at Elland Road.

Leeds have enjoyed a noteworthy return to the top-flight after a 16-year absence from the Premier League, following their promotion from the Championship in 2019/20.

Despite keeping the vast majority of the same squad, albeit bolstered to the tune of seven arrivals over the summer, the Lilywhites have never looked to be under threat of relegation and Bielsa has been lauded for his stubborn approach to playing free-flowing attacking football.

Gillespie, who played for five different clubs in the top flight, including Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, told Football FanCast that the Elland Road faithful will be waiting with bated breath for the 65-year-old to commit:

“I’m sure Leeds fans are praying that he signs that contract because he’s been great. The thing I like about him is nothing changes for him in terms of the way he wants to play football.

“If they’re losing, which they have been in games, I remember Man United put six past them at Old Trafford, it finished 6-2, but nothing changed in that, they still played the same style of football.

“They were 3-0 down quite early on, they still had their beliefs where they will go and play football.”

Bielsa has previously been labelled a ‘genius’ by current Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and credited with a hand in developing elite coaches such as Pep Guardiola.

Will Marcelo Bielsa stay at Leeds United?

The Argentine coach has seemingly taken to both the football club and the city, rarely seen without his famous Leeds tracksuit – leading to the belief there’s little chance of him leaving.

An all-encompassing figure at the club, there will certainly be hope among the supporters that this season isn’t the last of Bielsa.
