Phil Hay has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic’s The Phil Hay Show about all things relating to Leeds United.
One of the topics that he spent some time on was Rodrigo De Paul after the Whites were linked with the Udinese man earlier this week.
Leeds tried to sign the Argentina international in the last summer transfer window but couldn’t agree a fee, and he remained with the Serie A side, where he has been one of their best players this season, earning an average WhoScored rating of 7.46/10.
However, Hay is not convinced that the Whites will sign him this summer.
He said: “The more I’ve heard about it, the more it sounds as if Rodrigo De Paul was pushed Leeds’ way by somebody rather than Leeds actively going and asking the question about him.
“It has to be said that in the 12 months since, it’s never gone away, this, and it’s been [a] constant source of discussion. It’s been [a] constant source of reports in Italy, in particular.
“It still is that name that keeps doing the rounds, and it’s odd because it’s got to the stage now where it’s become a little bit of an obsession.
“In a pool of European midfielders which stretches to hundreds, he has become the answer and the player that some people seem absolutely desperate to sign, and I’m still not convinced that it’s going to happen.”
Do you think Leeds will sign De Paul?
No, not a chance
Yes, we could get him
TIF Thoughts on De Paul…
There is no question that the 26-year-old is Udinese’s standout player as he was their best player last season, and as previously mentioned, he is among their best players this season as well.
De Paul is also versatile and can play in a number of positions, so you would think that he could be the ideal addition for the Whites if they were to sign him.
However, Hay doesn’t seem too confident that Leeds will sign him, and we will have to see what happens in the summer with De Paul.
