Phil Hay has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic’s The Phil Hay Show about all things relating to Leeds United.
One of the topics that he spent some time on was Robin Koch and why Leeds signed him.
Leeds signed the German international in the last summer transfer window for £11.7m and he played in all of the Whites’ first 11 league games until he suffered a knee injury that ruled him out for a long time.
Koch has played 42 minutes in the last five games as the Whites slowly ease him back into action.
The 24-year-old is naturally a centre-back but has filled in as a defensive midfielder in his career before, and Hay revealed that was one of the reasons Leeds signed him.
He said: “He [Koch] does play from time to time there for Germany; it was one of the reasons why they signed him because they thought he could be a little bit adaptable in the sense that he should play centre-back, but he could step out and play defensive midfield if they needed him to do that.”

The German, who is valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, has had a rather inconsistent start to life in the Premier League with some solid performances mixed in with some dreadful ones.
However, before his injury, he was a key part of the side, and it will be interesting to see how much game time he gets between now and the end of the season, be it in his natural centre-back role or as a defensive midfielder.
It is probably too early to judge how good a signing Koch has been for Leeds, but we hope that he gets the chance to prove his worth before the season ends.
