Former footballer Dean Windass has claimed Leeds United should re-sign left-back Danny Rose in the summer.

Rose is a product of the Leeds academy, but never made his first-team debut for the Whites.

The Doncaster-born defender was snapped up by Spurs for £900,000 all the way back in 2007 and enjoyed loan spells with teams as varied as Bristol City, Sunderland and Watford before becoming an established Spurs squad player.

However, recent months have seen Rose totally excluded from Jose Mourinho’s plans in favour of other left-back options in Ben Davies and Sergio Reguilon.

Out of contract in the summer, Rose’s contractual situation matches that of Ezgjan Alioski, who has been linked with a move away.

Given his availability for free and his connections to Yorkshire, snapping up Rose in a reunion between club and player could also have the advantage of freeing up funds for investment elsewhere in the squad.

Windass has discussed Rose as an ideal replacement for the North Macedonian international.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Windass claimed: “I could see that. If you were talking about a David O’Leary they would bring back players like Danny Rose and James Milner, but Bielsa is a tough nut to crack.

“But if you put Danny Rose in the team now at Leeds United, there would be no problems. He can get up and down, he’s a fit lad, and maybe he wants to go back to Yorkshire with his family and settle down.

“If you said to me Danny Rose is signing for Leeds United, I would say good signing, but will Bielsa want him? That’s the thing.”

A return to his roots would certainly yield off-pitch benefits in a move closer to home, but whether or not he would be able to establish a foothold in Bielsa’s team is a different matter.

Bielsa is famed for his preference for high intensity pressing football that utilises, in part, wing-backs with attacking attributes.

He has managed 25 assists and 9 goals in over 200 appearances from a defensive position at Spurs, indicating his offensive qualities.

Given his availability for free and his connections to Yorkshire, snapping up Rose in a reunion between club and player could also have the advantage of freeing up funds for investment elsewhere in the squad.
