Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has urged John McGinn to carry the mantle at his old club following Jack Grealish’s injury, after he scored his side’s only goal in the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Grealish has undoubtedly been Villa’s main man this season, both scoring and creating goals for Dean Smith’s side.

However, the 25-year-old is currently out with an injury, meaning someone else needs to step up at this final part of the campaign. And Hendrie believes McGinn is just that man, praising the player for his hard work and ability to set the tone in the team.

When asked by TIF who has to try and take the mantle at Villa in Grealish’s absence, Hendrie said:

“He’s, for me, one of the best players in that team, in that Villa squad. So, you know, John McGinn is probably the next one that stands out a million miles for me. He leads by example, he works hard and he sets the tone in that team.”

The ex-Villa player concluded by saying:

John McGinn would be the next person, that man who’s got to stand up and be that next one in line.”

McGinn has been a huge success for Villa since arriving from Hibernian back in 2018. The 26-year-old Scotland international scored seven goals and provided nine assists for the Midlands club during that 2018/19 Championship campaign that ended with promotion, showing his value to the team.
