Arsenal reporter Charles Watts has spoken on his latest YouTube video to discuss Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s season so far following their game against Liverpool on Saturday evening.
The Gunners suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s side at the Emirates Stadium, with Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah providing the away side with the goals.
He said: “I hate the link between the new contract and Aubameyang’s loss of form. I just don’t believe that at all. I just think he’s having a difficult season when Arsenal weren’t creating chances, he wasn’t scoring goals – it’s as simple as that.
“Since Arsenal improved since Christmas and started creating chances, he’s scoring goals. Yes, he may not be scoring quite at the rate he was. But as I said, nine goals in 14 games, a lot of strikers would kill for a strike-rate like that, it’s not bad at all.
“And that’s because he’s getting more chances and he was also missing chances. Although it’s frustrating, at least he’s missing them. In that first half of the season when a lot of people were having a go at him, he wasn’t even missing chances because he just wasn’t getting them at all.”
Will Aubameyang hit 15 PL goals this season?
TIF Thoughts on Watts’ comments…
The striker has definitely not looked the same player this season as of years gone by and that can be seen through his mere nine goals which is currently 13 off what he managed to achieve last season – albeit with eight games remaining of the current campaign.
However, it is worth bearing in mind he has also been dealing with some significant and well-reported issues off the field which saw the 31-year-old drop out of the squad altogether as he went away to deal with family problems.
Yes, he has not managed to hit the numbers set in previous seasons for the Gunners, however, Watts was quick to rubbish any correlation between his new contract and his form this season – and the journalist’s defence of Aubameyang appears to hold sufficient weight.
