Pundit Adrian Clarke has made a big claim on how he thinks Arsenal need to approach the summer transfer window.

Arsenal haven’t had the greatest of seasons, currently sitting in mid-table with the Europa League their only chance of making a success of this campaign – certainly some way off where they used to be under Arsene Wenger.

But given the huge financial problems that they have, which will have been made worse by the lack of fans in the stadium this season, if they are going to put themselves in a position to bring in new players and get back to those lofty heights they were once used to, they are going to have to jettison a large number of the current squad in order to raise funds.

Speaking on the Football Writers Podcast, Clarke felt that whilst there are some players who can consider their positions to be safe, for the rest of them, they are very much on the chopping block and could be out the door for the good of the team:

“Personally, I would keep the coach and ditch the players, a lot of the players. That, I think, is the best method for Arsenal to get out of their current predicament. I see a really good coach in Arteta, but I think he needs better characters to work with, players that he can mould.

“I think Tierney, Saka, Partey, Odegaard if they can keep him – that’s the spine of the team. Every other position, in my view, is up for grabs. I think there has to be a huge call during this summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Adrian Clarke’s comments about Arsenal…

Taking a look at the current Arsenal squad and their respective transfer values (from Transfermarkt), there are certainly a lot of reasonably-priced players that could be sold in order to find the upcoming window.

It’s just a case of how many the club are willing to get rid of. Do they butcher the whole squad and completely start afresh, or will it take just the sale of one or two big-name players such as Alexandre Lacazette, who is out of contract next summer, and go for a ‘one in, one out’ policy and tweak the team one name at a time.
