Football broadcaster Darren Fletcher has been sharing his thoughts on the upcoming summer transfer window and the potential business Nottingham Forest should be looking to do in it.

This comes after Fletcher made a guest appearance on the latest episode of Forest-themed podcast Garibaldi Red where he spoke about a range of subjects concerning the Midlands club.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

On the subject of the summer transfer window, Fletcher said this about the club targeting a new striker. (7.57)

He said: “I think in this regard when they look to recruit a striker, I think it’s essential that they go for a tried and tested proven player, whoever that might be.

“Now, that might cost a little bit more, but I don’t think you can take a chance on a striker. I think you’ve got to go and sign one that you are, I mean, nothing’s guaranteed, but I think you’ve got to go and sign one who you’re pretty confident is going to come in and do exactly what he’s supposed to do.

“If you need a striker that you get you 25 [goals per season], you can’t take a risk that someone might come into the Championship and adapt to it. I think you’ve got to go and get one that you’re pretty confident is going to do it and then you can build the whole thing around it and I think with having Chris and his staff in there now, I think you’re more likely to get that kind of recruitment then at this stage of last summer.

“I’m a lot more confident that they can go and identify a player that can come in, be the right fit for a Championship club, the right fit for Forest, more confident now than I have been before because of the fact that Chris Hughton is going to have a big say in whoever that player is.”

So far this season, Forest have won 12 out of the 44 league games they’ve played thus far, drawing 15 and losing 17 along the way, leaving them in 17th place with 51 points (per BBC Sport).

TIF Thoughts on Darren Fletcher’s comments on Forest’s search for a striker…

Given how Forest have only managed to score 36 goals throughout the campaign so far, fewer than the likes of Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town and Coventry City, it’s understandable why Fletcher has suggested that the club should try and sign a striker in the summer that can adapt quickly and score a lot of goals.

Do Forest need to sign a striker this summer?

In our view, if Forest manage to sign a striker in the upcoming summer transfer window who can settle in quickly at the club as score goals on a regular basis, this would be a great way for the club to progress on their current season when the next one kicks off.

However, given the financial difficulties the Championship clubs have had to deal with as a result of the global pandemic, this could well be a hurdle the club might have to climb over if they are to sign a striker in the summer.
