The Athletic’s Leeds United reporter Phil Hay has featured on the latest edition of the Ask Ornstein show to discuss all things related to the Yorkshire club.

One topic of discussion was that of rumoured transfer target, Rodrigo De Paul, who was linked heavily with a move to the club last summer.

The Argentine midfielder has featured heavily for Udinese this season with 28 Serie A appearances, racking up six goals and six assists in those games (via Transfermarkt).

His Udinese side are currently slumped in 12th position of the Serie A table which will not help their hopes of keeping him with Liverpool recently reported to be interested in the 26-year-old.

However, speaking to David Ornstein about potential summer signings, the Leeds journalist was adamant it is now a deal that is not likely to happen.

He said: “Every time I ask about him, every time I enquire about where this is going, I’m told that it’s highly unlikely Leeds will sign him, that they want different midfielders, that they did ask, or at least there was contact last summer, but it never got to an advanced stage.  (8:05)

“It’s just one of those targets or those options that you never want to rule out entirely because he is a very good player. You can see how he would fit, you can see how his attributes which slot in quite nicely into the area where Leeds need players. But it’s not to say 100% that it won’t be him, but I think it won’t.”

TIF Thoughts on Hay’s comments…

It is apparent from what Hay has to say that he feels the midfielder would be an excellent addition. The 26-year-old is valued at £34.2m by Transfermarkt which would be a huge sum of money for Leeds to spend given their recent financial report.

The midfielder has previously opened up on his desire to play for Leeds having replied on Twitter to a transfer claim linking him with a possible move to Yorkshire.

However, Hay has certainly played down the possibility of a move happening this summer.
