Former Leeds United league champion Jon Newsome has told This Is Futbol that Marcelo Bielsa is likely to sign a new contract at Elland Road, insisting he has heard whispers that talks between the two parties are already underway.

Bielsa has made a habit of only signing one-year rolling contracts so his current deal expires at the end of the season.

He has enjoyed a fantastic season at the club, guiding them to the safety of 10th, taking 45 points from 31 games.

They will be out to finish strongly and keep climbing the table after a season in which they have bloodied the nose of a few giants, notably beating Manchester City 2-1 last time out, even after being reduced to 10 men.

Still, Bielsa has yet to commit to fresh terms and it was a similar story last season, despite taking Leeds to the promised land of the Premier League.

Newsome, though, says that he has heard that the two paries are already negotiating, and has no doubts that he will commit to stay at Leeds.

He told TIF: “I have heard a few whispers and a few rumours on social media that talks have already opened between the club and Marcelo Bielsa.

“If you compare it to last season, they’re probably a month or two ahead of the game already. So you would like to think that he may decide to stay.

“I think he’s got unfinished business. He wants to see how far he can take the club, they’ve had an absolutely amazing first season in the Premier League and undoubtedly he’ll want to test himself and see if he can improve on that next season.”
